Todd Poliskin

For Todd, buildings are living things. They embody a unique spirit, evolve over time and have the power to nurture those who inhabit them. These beliefs were amplified by his travels after completing architecture school (Bachelor of Architecture, University of Oregon, 1985) and years spent living in the Middle East. His experiences abroad taught him to look at buildings as they change over the centuries and become cultural texts, expressing the changing history and values of their inhabitants.

Although philosophical by nature, Todd is extremely hands-on and pragmatic in vocation. He enjoys working closely with clients, city entities, and contractors to help each project reach its fullest potential. He sees the complexities of projects as an opportunity to discover "what the project ultimately wants to be" and is undaunted by complex site, function or political pressures on a project.

Todd's ability to blend traditional motifs with contemporary design and technology is exemplified by two recent mixed-use projects in Oakland: The Mesghinna Building and Centrada Temescal. Each of these illustrates his consistent sensitivity to the architectural context as well as his ability to create memorable buildings that meet the needs of modern life.

Todd joined KDA in 1997 and became an associate principal in 2005. He is a instructor of design at the UC Berkeley Extension and is a Certified Green Building Professional.
